Hello Kickstarter backers,
We have a lot of updates to share with you! Thanks so much for your patience as we near the finish line and get ready to ship these out soon. Here’s the haps with the DIY Drone kits. (Update on the Calculator kit coming soon.)
We have all the DIY Drone parts in-house and we’re starting to assemble them right now. As we do some final tweaks and put them together, we’re expecting that the drones will start to ship this month. (If we hit any unexpected delays it will be July.) As you can see from the photos below, we have a TON of parts here.
Here are some of the components that go into the drone: motors, motor housings, electronics (including electronic speed controller and wifi antenna), and snap-together hub parts.
Here’s an idea of what the drone hub looks like with the components inside:
Drone app
We also have a working version of the Pilot App, which is our app for Android and iOS that will be your controller for flying the drone (and includes badges for certain achievements).
Here are some more photos of what’s coming down the pike.
As the first drones come off the production line we will share photos, so stay tuned! We'll also add a Calculator update soon. Thanks for being awesome!

Drone Production Update

THE PARTS ARE IN!! THE PARTS ARE IN!! Our warehouse is almost done receiving all the parts we have sourced to build the drone! This is exciting because it means we are very close to starting the production/assembly of the Drone Kit.
We’ve been working closely with a company here in Austin to do the assembly work for this kit. They will be taking all the raw parts we give them, solder up up the connections, assemble the drone, and test every single one before we send them out. It has been great working with a local Austin company because with just a quick phone call we can be sitting down and discussing a change with them in office that same day.
The next steps after the drones have been assembled and tested is to bring them back to our facility for kitting. Our shipping and fulfillment coordinator, Zack, will make sure the drone gets put in a box with a pen, some extra wings, and a charger for the battery. Next will be label printing and shipping your drone right to your front door.
As a small note to end this update, I wanted to thank all of you backers who have supported us. We are so grateful to have a community that is patient and understands there can be many hurdles when bringing a new product to market. Thanks again and have a great weekend everyone!
Have a great weekend!

Calculator Update Time!

Hi Backers!
A couple weeks ago we gave you an update on where the Drone is in the production process. Now it’s time to talk about the Calculator!
We reached out to a friend in the UK to help us polish off the final bits of coding that needed to be done. From the video you can see the original calculator had an LED array to display the numbers, but we’ve switched to an LCD display which is much easier to read. The original code was heavily based on LED driver, so by replacing that with an LCD screen we have essentially needed to start from scratch with our code. Our programmer friend has a new calculator in hand and will start testing the new code next week.
We’ve also made some changes to the way the calculator attaches to the paper you draw on. The original prototype was stuck to the paper using z-axis conductive tape, which posed a big problem for us -- you could only make one calculator! We always want to be making products which you can re-configure to play with and learn over and over. Our version 2 used a paper clip-like attachment, but after bending it back and forth many times the PCB got bent and lost some of its clamping force making the connection to the paper unreliable.
This wasn't something we wanted you to have to deal with, so time to try again. We finally feel we've gotten it right with our 3rd version of the calculator. It uses two separate PCBs connected by rivets to ensure a tight clamping force to the paper, and an ergonomic peg you push to separate the board in order to slide paper in-between.
We want to assure you we are working hard to get these products out to you as soon as possible. Kickstarter is where our company got it’s start and is a community we are so happy to be a part of. You guys, our backers, are our most important customers since you have believed in us since the beginning and we appreciate you sticking with us and understanding the struggles it takes to get a product from concept to market working in a small team.
Check out the pictures below to see our Product Designer, Val, soldering up one of the final prototypes.
